Door and Window Hardware: SS 304 or 202, Hinges, Locks and Bolts

Near the coast, choose SS 304 or brass hinges, bolts and handles; SS 202 has less nickel and more manganese and can rust in humid, salty air. Use three 100–125 mm hinges on a standard door and four on a heavy main door, with a mortise lock on the main door. Insist on stainless screws.

How we supply it: Door and window hardware is arranged through a partner hardware dealer who quotes, supplies and bills it and pays us a referral commission. We ask for the grade (304, 202 or brass) against every line of the quote, so any substitution is visible.

What counts as hardware

Door and window hardware is the set of metal fittings that hang, close, fasten and lock shutters: hinges, handles, tower bolts, aldrops, locks, stoppers and door closers.

It is a small part of a house budget and the part touched every day. Cheap hinges show first as a sagging, scraping door.

Next question: How many hinges and what size? More

Hinges: number and size

These are typical sizes; heavy carved shutters may need larger hinges, so ask the joiner.

  • Standard 2100 mm high door: 3 hinges
  • Heavy or wide main door: 4 hinges, with bearings or washers
  • Hinge size: 100 mm for internal doors, 125 mm for main doors
  • Screws: stainless, the same grade as the hinge, long enough to bite into the frame

Next question: How do I check the grade? More

Checks on hardware

  1. Look for the grade stamped on the item or packing; if in doubt, use a stainless grade test kit. A magnet is not reliable, as both 304 and 202 are largely non-magnetic.
  2. Hinge knuckles should turn smoothly with no play.
  3. Check leaf size and thickness against the order.
  4. Screws should be stainless and of the same grade; plated screws rust first.
  5. For locks, check the lever count, the number of keys and that they arrive sealed.

Next question: When should hardware be fitted? More

Fitting and care

  • Keep hardware boxed and dry until fixing.
  • Fit it after shutters are polished or painted, or mask it during painting.
  • Oil hinges and locks lightly once in a while; avoid grease that collects dust.

Next question: Which wood for the main door? More

Hardware mistakes

  • SS 202 hinges on bathroom and coastal doors.
  • Two hinges on a heavy shutter, which then sags.
  • Stainless hinges fixed with plated mild-steel screws.
  • Paint brushed over hinges and lock faces.
  • A door closer rated for a lighter door than it is fitted to.

Questions buyers ask

Door and Window Hardware: questions buyers ask

Which is better, 202 or 304 stainless steel?

304, for anything exposed to moisture or sea air: with about 8% nickel it resists rust much better. 202 replaces part of the nickel with manganese, costs less and suits dry interiors, but it can stain and rust in bathrooms and near the coast.

Does a 202 grade SS get rust?

It can, especially in humid, salty air or where cleaning chemicals sit on it. Expect rust spots on 202 bathroom hardware in coastal homes; 304 holds up far better.

How to identify SS 304 and SS 202?

A magnet is not reliable, because both are largely non-magnetic. Use a stainless grade test kit with chemical drops that react to nickel content, ask for the mill test certificate, or have a sample checked at a metal-testing lab.

How many hinges should a door have?

Three for a standard 2100 mm high door and four for heavy or wide main doors. Use 100 mm hinges on internal doors and 125 mm on main doors, with screws of the same metal grade.

Mortise lock or cylindrical lock for the main door?

A mortise lock, set into the edge of the door, is stronger and the usual main-door choice; cylindrical locks suit bedrooms and internal doors. Back the main door up with tower bolts and a door viewer.
