M-Sand vs P-Sand vs Crusher Dust: Concrete, Plaster or Fill

M-Sand is concrete sand, P-Sand is plastering sand and crusher dust is unwashed fines for filling and bedding. All three come off the same granite crusher; grading and washing make the difference. Today's ex-works rates: M-Sand ₹525 per MT, P-Sand ₹680 per MT, crusher dust ₹450 per MT.

Verdict: M-Sand for anything structural, P-Sand for any surface you will see finished, crusher dust for anything buried, bedded or compacted. Buying the wrong one costs more in cement and rework than the price gap between them.

P-Sand full form: plastering sand. It is the finer, washed cut of the same crushed granite, made so a 12 mm coat spreads and finishes without pits.

Mixed loads: Block and paver makers often want 6mm chips, 12mm and crusher dust together. We can load a mixed consignment in your proportions, weigh it and invoice it as one 16–20 MT delivery.

Next question: How much plaster does a tonne of P-Sand cover? About 500 sq ft at 12 mm. Read

Three mistakes that cost more than the sand

  1. Crusher dust in a slab. The uncontrolled fines soak up water and cement, the mix bleeds and cube results drop. The saving per tonne is small next to the cost of a weak slab.
  2. Zone II M-Sand in plaster. The coat stays rough and the mason adds cement and water to make it finish. Use P-Sand.
  3. Unwashed sand sold as washed. "Double washed" is a sales phrase, not a test result. Do the jar test and ask for the lot's 75-micron figure.

Next question: How do I run the jar test? Fill a jar a third with sand, add water, shake, wait an hour, read the top layer. Read

Which is costly, M-Sand or P-Sand?

  • P-Sand, ex-works: ₹680 per MT
  • M-Sand, ex-works: ₹525 per MT
  • Crusher dust, ex-works: ₹450 per MT

P-Sand is screened finer, so it usually sits a little above M-Sand per tonne. The gap between dust and the washed sands is the cost of washing and grading; buy dust for dust jobs, not as cheap sand.

How much of each you will need

  • M-Sand for concrete: about 0.7 MT per m³ of M20 concrete; a 1,000 sq ft, 5-inch slab needs about 8 MT.
  • P-Sand for plaster: about 0.2 MT per 100 sq ft of 12 mm plaster, so one tonne covers roughly 500 sq ft.
  • Crusher dust for paver bedding: a 40 mm bed under 1,000 sq ft of pavers is about 3.7 m³, roughly 6.3 MT.
  • Whole house: about 38 MT of M-Sand and 9 MT of P-Sand per 1,000 sq ft of built-up area.

All four are typical estimates; your engineer's quantities govern. Add 5–10% for wastage when you order.

Next question: How many loads is that? A 10-wheeler carries 16–20 MT, so most houses need two to three loads of sand per 1,000 sq ft. Read

Questions buyers ask

Questions buyers ask

What is the full form of P-Sand?

P-Sand stands for plastering sand: washed crushed granite sand, finer than M-Sand, essentially all passing 2.36 mm and graded to IS 1542 for plaster.

Which is best, M-Sand or P-Sand?

Neither is better overall; they do different jobs. M-Sand (Zone II) is for concrete and masonry mortar, P-Sand is for plaster, pointing and tile bedding.

Can M-Sand be used for plastering?

It can, but the finish is rough and it needs more cement paste. For 12–20 mm plaster specify washed P-Sand and keep M-Sand for concrete.

Can crusher dust be used instead of M-Sand in concrete?

Not in structural concrete. Crusher dust is unwashed and its fine fraction is not controlled, so strength and workability suffer. Use it for bedding, backfill, plinth filling and block making.

How much sand is 1 unit?

One unit is 100 cubic feet, or 2.832 m³. That is about 4.75 MT of M-Sand, 4.6 MT of P-Sand or 4.8 MT of crusher dust, depending on moisture.
