OPC 53 vs PPC Cement: Which for Slabs, Plaster and Blockwork

Use PPC for most house work: masonry, plaster, footings and slabs that are cured properly. Use OPC 53 where early strength matters, such as precast items or early removal of formwork, or where your mix design names it. Both are standard Indian cements (IS 269 and IS 1489-1), and we arrange them through partner suppliers.

Buying and storing cement

  • Bag: 50 kg. Check the week and year of manufacture printed on the bag and use older stock first.
  • Storage: keep bags on a raised platform or pallets, off the floor and away from walls, covered against rain, stacked no more than about 10 high.
  • Lumps: lumps that do not crumble between your fingers mean the cement has taken moisture; keep it out of structural work.
  • Grade: buy what your engineer specified; grades are not interchangeable in a mix design.

How we arrange cement

Cement is a partner item for us. We arrange it, along with paints, putty, electricals, windows, doors, wood work, plumbing and tiles, through local partner suppliers, who pay us a referral commission. Our OPC 53 and PPC rate pages show an indicative Chennai market rate per bag; the partner supplier confirms the brand and the day's rate when you order.

What we supply ourselves is the rest of the mix: washed M-Sand, P-Sand and jalli from the Perindesam works, and river sand, TMT bars, blocks and bricks from our stock yards.

Next question: What do the sand and jalli for a slab cost? See the cost table in the concrete guide. Read

Questions buyers ask

Questions buyers ask

Which cement is best for a roof slab?

Either PPC or OPC 53 can make a good slab; the mix design and curing matter more than the bag. With PPC, keep the slab wet for at least 10 days (IS 456); OPC needs at least 7.

Can OPC 53 be used for plastering?

It can, but its fast strength gain and higher heat make shrinkage cracks more likely unless curing is careful. PPC is the usual choice for plaster and masonry mortar.

How much is 1 bag of cement?

We do not sell cement or publish its price. We arrange it through local partner suppliers, who quote by brand and grade on the day of order.

Is PPC weaker than OPC 53?

PPC's minimum 28-day strength in IS 1489-1 is 33 MPa against 53 MPa for OPC 53, but concrete strength comes from the mix design. PPC gains strength more slowly and keeps gaining after 28 days.
